This class project began in 1997 when a group of students were studying the history of English for about a month. The What is English? survey was designed to get a wide ranging, world wide response. Now, in the year 2000, we publish some of the results of this Internet poll.

English, to me is the ability to communicate and understand ideas and thoughts with ease. While I understand and respect that 'grammar and punctuation etc.' has it's place in English I do not feel this the the most important function. I belive English has become an international communication tool and in the future will continue (with such entities as the internet etc.) to change and grow to be even more useful as an international language.

note: I teach conversational English here in Japan and am from Canada originally. If I had a nickel for every American teacher who asked me if my wife (who is Japanese) "...can speak American?" "American-English" is one type of English but... 'American' is not a language! (this was asked by teachers!!!)
