Unit 4: Cells as the building blocks of all life!

Date

In class

Assignment

Day 1
Mon./Tues.
Nov 10 &11

What do you already know about the Digestive System?

Video: Human Digestive System

Introduction to Enzymes (Structure/Function-general)

Read, color and underline digestive system handout. Underline the text with the corresponding color used in the diagram.

Don't forget to bring your textbook to class every day!!!

Day 2
Wed./Thurs.
Nov 12 & 13

Fun with Enzymes

Enzyme minilab: Why do cuts fizzle when you pour H202 (hydrogen peroxide) onto it?

Testing salivazy amylase

Assign enzyme models

Read Text p. 48 - 53. Answer Critical Thinking question #5 p. 48 and Alternative Assesment: Modeling a Process p. 53. You will be assigned a 'class' of enzymes that your model will represent: protease, lipase, nuclease, salivary amylase, pancreatic amylase or peroxidase. Be prepared to present your 3D model to the class and explain what it does! You will be graded on the actual model and your explanation of its action.

Day 3
Fri./Mon.

Nov 14 & 17

Show and Tell: enzyme models

More info on Enzymes.

YouTube Enz Video

Read text p. 221 to 225. Start taking notes on the reading if you haven't been doing this. It takes time, but it helps so much with your understanding! It will help you get ready for the quizzes...

Study for a Quick Quiz: Macromolecules and Enzyme. Look over your notes, lab activities, reading, and homework from Days 1,2 & 3.

Start working on test corrections.

Tutorial Tuesday at 2:25 = study for quiz! Tutorial Thursday at 9:25 = mandatory for test corrections!

Day 4
Tues-Wed

Nov. 18 & 19

Mini-quiz: Enzymes

Build-a-Presentation on Human digestion -- Big Macs!

Quiz on human digestion. Can you label a diagram? What are the parts of the digestive system and what role do they have? Use your coloring sheet, notes on the presentations and refer to text pages 978-984. If you missed any notes in class, you can view the html version or a pdf version of the handouts. Know the order, location, what happens and how for the following parts: mouth, teeth, salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum), pancreas, liver, gall bladder, large intestine (cecum, colon, rectum), and anus.

Test corrections due on Tuesday 11/25. They will not be accepted later.

Day 5

Thurs-Fri
Nov. 20 & 21

Quiz: Human Digestion

How do we define life?

Review: properties of life & Levels of biological organization

The Cell Theory

Lab: Using the microscope to study cell diversity

Read in text book pgs 168 – 170 and 172 – 173 and 427 – 428 on Origin of Eukaryotic Cells.
Answer:
1. What 3 statements describe the cell theory?
2. What structures do all cells have?
3. According to the endosymbiotic theory, how might chloroplasts and mitochondria have originated?

Day 6
Mon-Tues

Nov. 24 & 25

Continue microscopy work

Evolution of a cell

Endosymbiosis theory

Prokaryotic vs. eukaryotic cells

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Day 7
Wed-Mon

Grandparents Day!

Nov. 26 & Dec. 1

Structure of cell membranes

Bubbles as cell membrane models!

Know: how to use a microscope, parts of the microscope, how to estimate the size of a cell, pro vs eukaryotic, cell theory, what is endosymbiosis

Finish all questions on lab handout. Carefully look over sketches and calculations. Come to tutorial if you need extra time on any of the slides.

Day 8
Tues-Wed.
Dec. 2 & 3

Movement of materials in and out of the cell

Dialysis demo lab

Elodea & Salt water investigation

Finish questions on the lab handout.

Fill out structure function chart for cell parts using pages 174 – 181.

Rewrites of Stream Ecology Lab for up to 80% due Friday only.

Day 9

Thurs-Fri

Dec. 4 & 5

Cell Structures

Study for quiz on cell membranes, movement through the membrane & cell structures. Use http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/westmin/science/sbi3a1/Cells/cells.htm to see great summaries and animations of cell parts.

Read pag 182 – 189 and answer questions 1-6 on page 189.

Finish all late work or corrections! No work will be accepted after the start of next class!

Organize for Finals!
