Humpback Whales

and how they talk

Of the Baleen whales, the Humpback are some of the most fascinating. This is in part due to their communication across the SOFAR channel.Their songs, although about which we know relatively little, appear to be extremely complex. Scientists have found that a song may run up to thirty minutes and will then be repeated. The SOFAR channel serves as the medium for this singing, letting whales from all over the ocean receive a particular message. I borrowed an album of Humpback whale songs from a friend of mine and it was amazing to think that I was listening to the language of another species.
