MARIN ACADEMY'S

OCEANOGRAPHY HOME SITE
(May 1997)

The Oceanography course at Marin Academy is a year-long honors level course taught as a college level survey course in the marine sciences. The course provides students with an understanding of the geological, chemical, physical and biological processes operating in the world's oceans. Special attention is placed on the formation and evolution of ocean basins, the chemical characteristics of seawater, the physical nature of the oceans especially waves and tides, marine biology, and the important relationship between the world oceans and the global environment. A significant portion of the course is devoted to marine biology and the effects that humankind is having of the marine ecosystem.

As an honors-level course, students are expected to do a great deal of independent work outside of class. Independent projects and field trips are planned throughout the year to areas of oceanographic interest. Our 1996-97 oceanography students have designed this web site. Topics covered in this course have been reported on by students and their reports are linked through this web site.

This Oceanography course was formerly taught by Don Alexander.
(It is presented here in archival format.)
