GUERILLA MEDIA

Students interview Mary Kay Sweeney of Homeward Bound

Guerilla media is part advocacy journalism, part documentary, and part editorial. Organizations and individuals use guerilla media to engage in public dialog about important issues, to advocate action on the part of members in the community, or simply to encourage support for their work or political candidates and causes.

This year we got the chance to have fun, make a difference in the world, and learn filmmaking techniques all at the same time. Working with Homeward Bound of Marin students explored the important topic of homelessness and interviewed people who live outside and others who have survived homelessness to lead successful lives once again. The hope is we were able to provide them an opportunity to tell their stories. Then we produced broadcast quality video to advocate for their needs and the services at Homeward Bound.

Dignity

Our week started with a brief look at guerilla media, examples of political ads and other short films. We looked at documentary and filmmaking techniques, and learned how to write and produce a short video piece. We went on location for parts of two days and then moved into the post-production mode. The post-production process took place in MA’s Multimedia lab students where will work in teams using Final Cut Pro video editing software and other image, sound, and video editing applications to create the final videos.

On Friday we published our own DVD and screened our video for the community at the end of the day.
We hope you enjoy our work!
