Unit 6: Inference With Quantitative Data

Date Topics and Concepts Homework
Friday 19 February Test Unit 5 Minicourse
Tuesday 2 March

Review of the normal distribution with quantitative data via warmup. Combining normal random variables, and the distribution of the sample mean when the population is normal. The distribution of the sample mean when the population is not normal - The Central Limit Theorem - via experiment/exploration.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 18 (pp 419 - 430.)

Do pp 434 - 437: 27, 30, 33, 37, 47.

Thursday 4 March

Warmup. Confidence Interval for the mean - using the normal distribution. What to do when the distribution is not normal and we don't know the population standard deviation? The t-distribution. Properties of the t-distribution and degrees of freedom. Using the t-distribution table to find critical values. Creating a confidence interval.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 23 (pp 530 - 536.)

Do pp 554 - 555: 1ab, 2ab, 3, 5, 9, 17.

Monday 8 March

Assumptions and conditions for using the t-distribution. Recap of boxplots and histograms. Using assumptions while creating a confidence interval. Using the calculator.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 23 (pp 537 - 542.)

Do pp 555 - 558: 11, 19, 31, 35.

Wednesday 10 March

Hypothesis Test for a mean via an experiment. Using the calculator

Class notes.

Finish reading Chapter 23 (pp 542 - 547.)

Do pp 555 - 558: 25, 29, 30, 37.

Monday 15 March

Comparing the means from two independent samples. Confidence interval for the difference between two means.

Class notes.

Quiz Chapter 23 next class.

Read Chapter 24 (pp 560 - 568.)

Do pp 579 - 581: 1, 3, 5, 12, 13.

Wednesday 17 March

Quiz on Chapter 23. Warmup on two sample confidence intervals. Hypothesis test for two independent means via worksheet.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 24 (pp 569 - 573.)

Do pp 581 - 585: 15, 20, 21, 23, 31.

Friday 19 March

Warmup. Paired t-test via experiment. Recap of blocking and before/after experiments.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 25 (pp 587 - 599.)

Do pp 602 - 605: 1, 7, 9, 15, 19.

Tuesday 23 March Warmup on the matched pairs design. Review Unit 6. Work on Practice Test.

Finish practice test and study for Unit 6 Test.

Solutions to practice test.
