Tuesday 25 August 2009

Introductions and expectations. What is statistics? Importance of statistics. Initial survey with Fathom in the computer lab at:

http://survey.keypress.com/web/surveyTakeForm.php?id=2302

Read "What are the chances?" article. Types of data. WHO (sample vs population) WHAT (types of variables) WHY(who runs the experiment) using class data.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 1: pp 2 – 6.
Read Chapter 2: pp 7 – 16.
Do pages 16 – 18: 2, 6, 9, 23, 25. Focus just on Who, What and Why.
Thursday 27 August

Displaying data (using Fathom in class with survey data). Bar charts (area principle). Pie charts (quick). Contingency tables. Simpson’s Paradox. Class Exploration (from Ask Marilyn).

Class notes.

Read Chapter 3: pp 20 – 37.

3, 13, 31, 36

(old problems: 3, 7, 12, 18, 19, 37ab)

Wednesday 2 September

Wrap up stem and leaf plots via warmup. Interesting features - outliers, gaps, bimodality, etc. Measurements of center and spread (interquartile range). Symmetry and measurements of center. Introduce histograms and relative frequency histograms via worksheet.

Class notes.

Read of Chapter 4: pp 54 – 60.
Do pages 72 - 76:
7, 10, 27, 30 (but not standard deviation).

Quiz on Friday (see Friday's Topics and Concepts.)

Friday 4 September

Warmup. Standard deviation. Interpreting the standard deviation. Unit changes effect on measurements of center and spread.

Quiz Chapter 1 – first half of Chapter 4 (types of data, contingency tables, segmented bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots.)

Class notes.

Finish reading chapter 4: pp 61 - 68.

Do pages 72 - 76: 16 (only calculate one standard deviation by hand, use your calculator for the rest), 25, 29, 45, 46.

Wednesday 9 September

Warmup on numerical measures of center and spread. Box plots. Comparing box plots. Determining whether a value is an outlier.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 5: pp 80 - 88.

Do pp 95 - 99: 6, 7, 11, 20.

Friday 11 September

Warmup 1 - histograms and box plots. Warmup 2 - measurements of center. Z-scores and comparing different distributions. Interpreting a z-score. More on unit changes and effect on center and spread. An introduction to the normal distribution and the 68%-95%-99.7% (Empirical) rule.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 6: pp 104 - 116.

Do pp 129 - 132: 1, 6, 8, 10, 25

Quiz on Chapters 4 and 5 (Measurements of center and spread, box plots, histograms)

Tuesday 15 September

Quiz on Chapters 4 and 5. Warmup on the 68%-95%-99.7% rule. Finding normal probabilities. Using the normal table.

Class notes.

Read Chapter 6: pp 116 - 119.

Do pp 131 - 133: 24, 34, 37, 43abc

Thursday 17 September

Wrap up normal probabilities. Going backwards to find a value from a probability. Using the calculator to find normal probabilities. More general practice. Wrap up Unit 1.

Class notes.

Finish Reading Chapter 6: pp 119 - 123.

Do pp 130 - 132: 39, 43de, 45, 46

Monday 21 September

Wrap up Unit 1. Work on review packet in class. Review linear functions if time.

Study for test.

Optional review problems pp 135 - 143: 1, 9, 13, 15, 19, 25, 33

Review packet solutions.

Wednesday 23 September Test Unit 1
