Future of renovations and development on campus?
q Renovations Ð thinking and appetite to be ÔgreenÕ in development projects.
q Short term vs. long term changes on campus and in old buildings
Interest in energy audit?
q Heard that PG&E audits are superficial Ð we may want to go deeper É it would be good to be able to have information about energy consumed in each building (rather than grouped on one meter) and information by system: lights, AC, etc.
q Could potentially start with a PG&E audit, then potentially use a firm that would provide more information
q Need to be strategic about the time of year when we conduct the audit to get useful information (not during breaks)
Interested enough to spend money on an audit?
q Depending on the cost Ð could be folded into operating budget É depends on how much audit costs
q More expensive
q DonÕt have a sense of costs É probably the more detailed info, the more expensive
If we created a list of options for an audit Ð would that be useful in moving ahead? Who should we report to?
q To Mike and Mickey
q Develop a sense of questions: Are we hoping to lower costs and reduce energy use É be more green? Looking for systems that are out-dated? What do we hope to get out of the audit É (MickyÕs request, savings beyond simply solar É bigger picture of conservation on campus)
q Questions to energy auditors: what do your other clients request? How might we learn from other projects Ð ideas that we havenÕt thought of?
The pool: could it be heated through solar?
q Same tank that was built by military academy Ð really old (last renovation in 1970Õs?)
q Appetite to do something with pool Ð have some designs/plans Ð opportunity to build something integrative (dealing with parking, garden, north side of campus) É and a green way of heating Ð start thinking green from the beginning of our campus projects Ð systems approach
What has been the stumbling block to the solar project thus far?
q Some issues require research: need to compare life of roofing to life of solar system that your installing Ð do you accelerate the re-roofing?
q Set aside money each year for larger routine renovations (PPR Ð Provision for Plant Renovation) Ð so costs of large renovations (roofing) isnÕt financial blow to school
q Finance for Recent Renovations Ð school took out bonds for BBLC Ð we owe 11 million for those improvements: legal agreements that limit our abilities to pursue a PPA agreement (because others would own and have access to the panels on our roof Ð conflict with security agreements of banks É the banksÕ agreements indicate that they would own any modifications we would make to buildings): we could ask banks for permission (could create some legal costs) É weÕve got to research this further
q Mike has set up conversation with Barry Neal for January
Mark: Committee of Board Ð Buildings and Grounds Committee
q Mimi Buckley heads the committee Ð systems thinking: step one is the audit
q Invited members of this committee to go to next Buildings and Grounds Committee: January 10, 2 Ð 3:30 pm (Thursday É G Block)
q Board oversees long-term vitality and financial health of school (big investments)
q On the table: campus master plan (long-term)
